SESSION 1 – TOP TIPS FOR BOARDS AND TRIBUNALS

Maya Gordon and Heidi Besuijen are seasoned advisors to administrative decision-makers. In this session, they distill an entire semester of law school into one hour-long crash course in administrative law.

In this Essential Training session, you will learn the essential infrastructure that supports your role as a decision-maker from top to bottom, from your governing legislation, to the proceeding itself, to reaching and communicating your decision.

Whether you are a brand-new administrative decision-maker, or have years of experience, you will find value in getting back to basics.


SESSION 2 – DECISION-WRITING BEST PRACTICES

Communicating your decision as an administrative decision-maker is critical. Unfortunately, the process of decision writing can be fraught with pitfalls. If written poorly, a decision can have unintended (and often very negative) consequences, including the potential to be overturned or sent back for reconsideration.

In this Essential Training session, not only will you will learn practical tips to write decisions that will avoid unintended results, you will also learn how to make the process of decision-writing clearer, easier and more enjoyable.


SESSION 3 – WHAT IS EVIDENCE AND HOW DO YOU USE IT?

The word “evidence” may evoke certain thoughts or concepts, but when it comes down to it, do you really know what “evidence” is? Evidence is not fact, and evidence is not argument.

In this Essential Training session, you will learn exactly what is meant by “evidence” and what is not. You will also learn how to best leverage evidence as you exercise your duty as an administrative decision-maker. As a result, you will feel more competent and confident as an administrative-decision maker.


SESSION 4 – VIRTUAL PROCEEDINGS: STORIES FROM THE TRENCHES

In this Essential Training session, you will hear from Julie Gagnon and Carol Zukiwski, senior lawyers and seasoned advisors to administrative decision-makers, about what they have learned after nearly a year of attending proceedings virtually.

You will also hear from administrative decision-makers themselves about what has worked, what hasn’t, and how they feel about the state of virtual hearings.

You will learn from the experience of others, and armed with knowledge and examples, be better prepared for your own virtual proceedings.


SESSION 5 – AN ACT TO PROTECT PATIENTS: 2 YEARS LATER

In 2018, the Government of Alberta amended the Health Professions Act with Bill 21: An Act to Protect Patients. These changes sought to give health Colleges in Alberta the tools to respond to allegations involving conduct of a sexual nature.

This Essential Training session will revisit An Act to Protect Patients. Julie Gagnon and Heidi Besuijen will discuss how the concepts of the Act have played out in practice. Not only will you learn about the practical effects of this legislation, you will learn valuable tips to implement when dealing with these types of allegations in the course of your work.


SESSION 6: THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX WITH YOUR HEARING PROCEDURE

As an administrative decision-maker, your decision is limited by the jurisdiction given to you by legislation and the application of principles of administrative law. However, you have considerable discretion in matters of procedure.

Many administrative decision-makers do not think very much about procedure. However, you can use your discretion in this area to improve both your experience and the experience of the participants.

In this Essential Training session, Shauna Finlay and Maya Gordon will teach you how to think creatively about hearing procedure. You will be given practical tips and tools you can implement right away to take the skill of managing hearings to the next level.
